Interpretation of quote

“While all engineers should have good communication skills, global engineers face additional challenges, making effective communication an imperative.”

Debra Kraft, Careers Content Writer, Demand Media (2016)

My interpretation of this quote is that for efficient and effective work to be done, communication is key. Especially in a globalised world, where people from all walks of life with different language and culture can participate in a project, the ability to communicate well is all the more important.

One example of this is when working with someone from China who can only speak in Chinese as someone who can only speak and write English. People in their home county will be more used to using their country's own system and language.

Even with programmes like google translate to assist in conveying meaning, the result of the translation will never as good as being able to understand the other person directly.

  1. Well said. While communication is important, working with people from different walks of life can be challenge especially when there is a language barrier. Though there may be a language barrier between one party and another, other forms of communication can be used such as written and visual communication which may be the solution especially in the engineering industry.

  2. I couldn't agree more with the idea that effective communication is important for engineers, especially in a global context. Although google translate is good but it always lack context and this will lead to misunderstandings therefore leading to delays, errors and maybe inefficiencies in project executions. "People in their home county will be more used to using their country's own system and language", I believe engineers have to cultivate cultural awareness and sensitivity as well.
